Kyphoplasty

Introduction to Balloon Kyphoplasty

Balloon kyphoplasty is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate pain from spinal fractures, typically caused by osteoporosis. By stabilizing the fractured vertebra and restoring its height, this treatment helps reduce pain and improve mobility, allowing patients to return to their daily activities with enhanced comfort and function.

Procedure Details

Preparation:

Before the Procedure:

  • Patients should avoid eating for several hours before the procedure.

  • Arrange for transportation home afterward, as you will not be able to drive.

Procedure Description:

Positioning:

  • Patients are positioned comfortably on the treatment table to allow easy access to the targeted vertebra.

Balloon Placement:

  • Using fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance, a small needle is precisely inserted into the fractured vertebra.

  • A balloon is then inserted through the needle and gently inflated to restore the vertebra's height.

Cement Injection:

  • Once the vertebra is restored to the desired height, the balloon is removed, and bone cement is injected into the cavity to stabilize the vertebra.

Duration:

  • The entire procedure typically takes about 30-60 minutes per vertebra and is conducted on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to go home the same day.

Frequency:

  • Balloon kyphoplasty is usually a one-time procedure for each fractured vertebra. However, multiple sessions may be necessary if there are multiple fractures.

Expected Results:

  • Patients often notice a significant reduction in pain immediately after the procedure.

  • The effects typically last for several years, providing significant pain relief and improved mobility.

  • Many patients experience reduced reliance on pain medications and an enhanced quality of life.

Risks and Side Effects:

Common Side Effects:

  • Temporary pain at the injection site, slight bruising.

Serious Risks:

  • Rare risks include infection, bleeding, or nerve damage.

Post-Treatment Care:

Recovery:

  • Most patients can return to normal activities the next day but should avoid strenuous activities for a short period.

Follow-Up:

  • Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to assess the effectiveness of the treatment and to make any necessary adjustments.

Patient Eligibility:

Candidacy:

  • Ideal for patients with painful vertebral compression fractures not responsive to other treatments.

Contraindications:

  • Not suitable for patients with certain infections, bleeding disorders, or those who are allergic to bone cement.
